15 YEARS HELMEPA JUNIOR

February 20, 2009 "ALL TOGETHER WE CAN" save the environment

The "HELMEPA Junior" Environmental Awareness Program honoring its protagonists, 48,000 children and 1,800 volunteer teachers throughout Greece, celebrated 15 years of existence during an event that took place on 20 February 2009 at the Athenaeum Intercontinental Hotel.


With anchor-woman the journalist Eirini Νikolopoulou and co-presenters new and old members from all over Greece, a unique "live broadcast" was staged to commemorate the 15th Anniversary of HELMEPA Junior. Shouting "All Together We Can" the children opened the broadcast and before inviting their guests to the stage, they mentioned some of their key activities, such as adoption and cleanup of beaches and interventions to Local Authorities.

The presenters invited to the stage, in the following order, the Minister of Education, Mr. Aris Spiliotopoulos, Mr. Ioannis Tzoannos, Secretary General of the Ministry for Mercantile Marine, the Mayor of Piraeus Mr. Panagiotis Fasoulas, the representative of the Greek Parliament's President and Chairman of the Environmental Committee, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Dr. Michael Ierides of CYMEPA in Cyprus, Mr. Levent Ballar of TURMEPA in Turkey, and Mssrs Chris Bastis and Antony Backos of NAMEPA in America, who stressed that further efforts are needed towards environmental awareness on the part of all, state and society, and wished every success to the young volunteers.

     
     

The representative of Lloyd's Register Foundation (formerly The LRET) Mr. Michael Franklin took part in the event mentioning the reasons for which his Organization contributes to the work of HELMEPA Junior adding that many in world shipping admire the Program's initiatives. 

The Chairman of HELMEPA Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos, seated amongst the children, expressed his affection and admiration for the children's work stating "if we show them trust and provide them with responsibility, then the children make wonders with their imagination and dynamism".

The Director General of HELMEPA Mr. Dimitris Mitsatsos talked about the beginning of HELMEPA Junior, providing the show with one more title "We thank children in Greece for showing us the way".

The show was concluded with the Academic, Professor Christos Zerefos, President of the Observatory of Athens, who with simple words talked about the environment and the threats it is facing, which have led to the climate change we are witnessing today, and answered the children's questions.

     

Present at the event were State and Local Authorities' officials, teachers, parents, schoolchildren and a large number of HELMEPA members, while the former Minister of Education, Mrs. Marieta Giannakou, also honored the event with her presence.
