Visit of Law students at HELMEPA’s environmental exhibition
On Wednesday, July 17, we had the pleasure to host about 50 Law students from Greece and other countries from around the world at HELMEPA’s environmental exhibition at CERES Building in Piraeus. The visit was arranged as part of the educational activities of the International Summer School on Maritime Law, which was organized for fifth consecutive year by the European Law Students Association Greece (ELSA Greece).
After a short tour at the Exhibition and acquaintance with HELMEPA’s aim and activities, the students attended an overview presentation of the international regulatory framework for the prevention of marine pollution from ships, since environmental issues in the maritime industry were the special focus of this year’s Summer School. The issue of the integrated management of garbage and other waste not only on board the ships but also at port reception facilities was particularly emphasized, in relation to the major environmental problem of marine pollution with plastics, oil and chemicals.
Of particular value to us is the following comment retrieved from the Exhibition visitors’ book, jointly signed by three female students from the Netherlands, Croatia and Norway, which relates also to this year’s IMO World Maritime Day theme – Empowering women in the maritime community!
“Thank you very much for this informative and very interesting presentation. We really enjoyed the visit and we hope it inspires a lot of people in this group to change their habits. It also inspired us to work in the maritime sector, because it is very important and there are too few women!”.
