European citizens join forces to collect data on marine litter
For the 5th consecutive year, HELMEPA was invited to participate in the Marine Litter Stakeholders Workshop organized and hosted by the European Environment Agency (ΕΕΑ) at its headquarters in Copenhagen.
During two days, environmental NGOs from various EU countries, which have as common concern the mobilization of volunteers to record marine litter on European coasts, exchanged valuable knowledge and experiences. They also considered ways to strengthen their synergies and make the best use of the data collected all over Europe through the Marine Litter Watch (MLW) electronic application and online database.
MLW app for tablets and smart phones has been developed by the EEA and is freely available (in a Greek version too) on the web, as a tool for standardized recording of marine litter info during voluntary beach clean-ups or monitoring activities.
Data which is either directly collected using the app or later submitted to the EEA by partner NGOs, as well as useful statistics and diagrams, are accessible through an open web platform.
This year’s meeting, which took place on 12-13 June with the participation also of representatives from research institutes, focused specifically on the improvement of MLW potential to produce harmonized, reliable, accurate and comparable data on beach litter, which could be used to monitor and assess the environmental status of European seas.
The participants also presented the work of their organizations on marine litter issues and particularly their experience from the use of MLW. They also initiated discussion on the establishment of one or more marine litter indicators which could be fed with the aforementioned data in order to support decision making and policy measures at the EU level to combat marine litter.
Those who wish to use MLW app and contribute to this effort as member of the HELMEPA community of volunteers, may contact our Environmental Awareness Sector for further details and guidance (email@example.com , tel. +30 210 9341233).
