30 Nov 2018

Isalos.net – an initiative of Gratia Publications with which the association has signed a memorandum of cooperation – organized on Saturday 24November 2018 a photography exhibition titled “Open Seas” at the Eugenides Foundation. On behalf of HELMEPA, Ms Irene Daifas, General Secretary of the Board, welcomed this “maritime” exhibition, while along with Ms Aikaterini Los, Special Secretary of HELMEPA’s Board, they where members of the 10-member judging panel, which comprised of prominent personalities of Greek shipping.

The event, which was attended by people of the arts, politics and shipping industry, presented the 24 original best photographs as selected by the judging panel of the Isalos.net photography contest about the sea and life onboard ships.

Winner of the first prize was Ms Elsa Sparou, Merchant Marine Chief Officer, while the second and third prizes were awarded respectively to Messrs Spyros Viltaniotis, graduate student of the Merchant Marine Academy of Kymi and Giorgos Paravas, a Merchant Marine Second Officer.

The amateur photographers-participants in the contest, mainly people working at sea or those enjoying marine travel who respect and appreciate the marine environment, captured images of maritime life such as ships, coastlines, harbors, rough seas and derelict crafts, showcasing another aspect of the seas beyond the familiar blue associated with summer holidays. The majority of the pictures were taken from the bridge or deck of merchant ships, presenting the daily life onboard a vessel.

The proceeds from the 24 photos, sold at a symbolic price during the exhibition, will be made available to HELMEPA in order to carry out activities towards the protection of the marine environment.
