The role of people regarding pollution prevention from ships was presented by Costas Triantafillou, Assistant Executive Coordinator at HELMEPA, who noted that despite the huge improvement in maritime safety over the last 40 years, human error remains the leading cause of accidents and pollution incidents.

He also referred to the long-term relationship of humans with our natural environment, a relationship that is constantly changing as we enrich our scientific knowledge about our planet and referred to the pioneering example of corporate social responsibility of Greek shipping with the establishment of HELMEPA in 1982.
