The program “Vorias” has launched in the island of Naxos with the support of A.C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation
The impact of winds on the pollution with waste of the northern coastal areas on the islands of our country is being examined by the new research program “Vorias” conducted by HELMEPA in collaboration with local stakeholders and the participation of volunteer groups. The program is supported by the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation in the framework of the Network of Cooperation for the Marine Environment, while garbage will be recorded using the protocol developed by the Network Team which is coordinated by HELMEPA.
The first three-day coastal clean-up actions took place in Naxos between July 24 and 26 with the participation of the Beach Cleaning volunteers group of HELMEPA Cadet Odysseas Lambrou. In cooperation with the Municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades and the Port Authority of Naxos, the northern beaches of Grotta, Amitis and the coastline in the northern part of the port were cleaned against the backdrop of historic Portara. Information material was also distributed to local tourism companies in order to raise awareness of all for the need to reduce single use plastics and pollution prevention.
The strong north winds that prevailed in Naxos during this three-day period made it difficult to carry out the cleanups, but at the same time helped to better visualize the problem, which appears to be strong on individual northern coasts as opposed to the majority of beaches in Naxos. Most of the garbage which was collected and recorded was plastic, such as bottles and lids, cups, food packaging, shredded pieces and fishing gear.
The “Vorias” research program will continue until December 2019 in Northern Evia and the islands of Aegina, Poros and Serifos in the hope that the results will contribute to a better understanding and response to the problem through the required synergy of all public stakeholders, professionals and the wider public on land and sea.
We warmly thank the volunteers of the Beach Cleaning group for their enthusiastic participation, the Port Authority and the Municipality of Naxos for their cooperation, the A.C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation for their support and our Associate Corporate Member Blue Star Ferries for its contribution to the travel of volunteers and staff.
